Biosensing, Connected.

IF WE make affordable self-powered biosensors that connect to smartphones, can we detect and monitor chronic diseases?

Biosensing, Connected.

WHY?

The recent health crisis has underlined the importance for both caregivers and patients to get access to simple and rapid solutions based on diagnostic tests and monitoring of pathologies in the field. Current monitoring suffers from poor ergonomics, lack of interoperability and high costs.

DISRUPTIVE IDEA

We have created an RFID patch that incorporates a novel bio-stimulant material based on graphene. The transparent and ultra-thin patch enables the acquisition of biomedical data from the wounds. The stored data will be transmitted to a dedicated Cloud platform using a simple smartphone. The collected data will be processed and effectively analyzed for better decision making. For that purpose, we have created an electronic wound patch that incorporates a novel bio-stimulant material based on graphene. The transparent and ultra-thin patch enables the acquisition of biomedical data from the wounds through non-invasive biosensor. It will follow the wound evolution and give an early alert in case of infection. NFC enables connectivity (and wireless power!) from most smartphones.

The elimination of the need to use a dedicated reader for detection is a major advantage for its widespread use in the field. it reduces costs, standardization promotes interoperability between data processing devices and makes it possible to introduce it in remote areas and developing countries.  All this can be done without compromising safety and integrity of data since chips, algorithms and infrastructure inherited from Smart Cards field are rugged, safe by design, and benefit from strong encryption layers and, if necessary, can rely on biometric layers for further health data protection.

The stored data will be transmitted to a dedicated Cloud platform using a simple smartphone. They will be processed and effectively analyzed for better decision making. Grapheal will provide chronic wound caregivers with an improved and individualized wound management e-health solution.

POSITIVE IMPACT ON SOCIETY

Our patch enable continuous remote wound telesurveillance & early alert for infection. This is particularly important for wounds that are long to heal, such as chronic wounds. Chronic wounds occur primarily in the legs of elderly or in the foot of diabetic patients. They can take from months up to years to heal. In 20% of the cases, they never heal and could lead to a limb amputation. This dramatic consequence affects more than half a million people every year in the world. And this number is rising by 6 %  due to the diabetes epidemic. Chronic wounds present a huge economic burden to healthcare systems that can certainly be reduced these sensors coupled to  digital solutions.

BENEFITS OF USING THE 3DEXPERIENCE PLATFORM

The 3DEXPERIENCE PLATFORM (BIOVIA)  is used to simulate the interaction between the biomarkers and the surface-coated sensor. We also use Solidworks of our 3D CAD design, Solidworks will be used for the design of wearables, microfluidics and test strip cases, while Outscale will be used for data storage. Finally Medidata will help for medical data acquisition, storage and analysis.

COLLABORATIVE & COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE

Grapheal multisensing platform approach revisits the way health data are acquired. Traditionally, Health data management involve repositories where information was stored, and access was limited to a select few. This approach ledd to information silos, hampering hindering the realization of the full potential of collective intelligence caused by data fusion. However, with the advent of digital technologies such as Grapheal , the possibility provided to collect biosensor data in an open fashion using smart phone while being GDPR compliant make. Prognosis through collaboration and collective way more easy.
