If we redesign surgical implants, can we improve the outcomes  of surgical procedures?

Smartweave is transforming surgical implants and tools through an AI-driven 3D design platform aimed at maximizing patient outcomes.  Our initial focus is to serve the significant unmet need for innovation in devices that treat stress urinary incontinence, starting with surgical mesh implants.

For more than five years, Smartweave has collaborated with leading surgeons, researchers, and domain experts to bring AI-driven 3D designs for surgical tools and devices to the operating room through learning and innovation.

This work has yielded a suite of high value solutions,  including the “Kasim” AI-based platform for 3D design and printing of personalized surgical implants.

Their disruptive idea is to integrate virtual human twins into the design of biomaterial and biomechanical innovations that can be optimized through AI on a patient-by-patient basis.  Implants and tools designed through Kasim would not only prevent complications common to surgical interventions — including scarring, bleeding and tissue damage — they would also be tightly coupled with training simulations that could accelerate onboarding processes for physicians to new surgical protocols. We expect our innovations to change the trajectory of how surgical implants deliver value for patients undergoing cardiovascular, neurological, orthopedic, or urological surgeries.

The 3DEXPERIENCE platform empowers Smartweave to design, simulate and optimize 3D shapes and structures, so to better iterate on and manage product revisions.  This platform also enables Smartweave to aggregate business intelligence data from which it can draw actionable insights and perform predictive analytics in the virtual human modelling environment.



Although surgical implants represent a multi-billion dollar market, innovation in their design has been slowed by only incremental improvements. As a result, devices for treating conditions like stress urinary incontinence have experienced failure rates of up to 25% and complication rates of up to 20%. 

Smartweave’s breakthroughs in personalized implants can deliver the impact that patients and surgeons around the world urgently demand.  We are structuring alliances with leading strategic partners such as Dassault Systèmes (for 3D solutions), Cellink (for 3D bioprinting) and the Texas Medical Center (for induction into their network of teaching hospitals) to help co-develop and commercialize our innovations.
